Knee pain Rainham and Medway treatment.

Knees complain when the demand placed on them outstrips what they are currently prepared for. Knowing which you are dealing with changes the plan entirely.

The starting point

How I approach knee pain

I see a range of knee problems, including patellofemoral pain, arthritis, meniscal injuries, dislocations and acute sporting injuries such as ACL injuries.

The approach depends on what we find. An acute injury needs a different approach to pain that has been present for a long time, but in both situations I want to understand the whole picture rather than simply treating the knee in isolation.

I'll look at things such as strength, movement, activity, loading capacity and what you want to get back to doing.

Common presentations

Treatment is personalised rather than generic. The approach depends entirely on what we find.

01

Patellofemoral pain

Pain around or behind the kneecap, often worse on stairs, hills and after sitting.

02

Arthritis

Manageable with the right loading. Strength and capacity matter far more than what a scan shows.

03

Meniscal injuries

Frequently manageable without surgery, depending on how the knee responds to graded loading.

04

ACL and acute sporting injuries

Accurate assessment at the start shapes the whole rehabilitation timeline and return to sport.

Progressive loading, properly structured

The part most rehab skips. Strengthening through the knee, hip and ankle that restores genuine capacity.

How we work

How we treat knee pain

Understand the whole picture

Strength, movement, activity, loading capacity and what you want to get back to doing.

Work out what the knee can tolerate

People often worry that using their knee is causing further damage. Understanding its actual capacity changes that.

Build strength and loading capacity

Gradually building strength, movement and capacity is a huge part of getting back to normal activity.

Hands on where it helps

Treatment can help you move more comfortably and build confidence, but the longer term focus is strength and capacity.

Real people, real recovery

Not sure where to start?

Answer 3 quick questions and we'll point you the right way.

How did it start?
When is it worst?
What is your goal?

A knee assessment would help.

Based on your answers, a full assessment would identify what is driving your symptoms and set a realistic timeline back to your goal.

Common questions

How long is an appointment and how many will I need?
The first appointment is long enough to take a full history, examine properly and explain what we found before you leave, rather than a rushed slot. Most people notice meaningful change within four to eight weeks for most tendon and patellofemoral problems. You will get an honest estimate at the assessment rather than an open ended plan, and if you need fewer sessions than expected we will say so.
Do you treat meniscus tears and post surgical knees?
Yes. Runners knee treatment, meniscus tear treatment, knee replacement rehabilitation and ACL rehabilitation are all handled here, with the plan matched to the tissue and the stage.
Why do you assess my hip and ankle for knee pain?
Because the knee sits between them and takes the consequences of how both behave. A stiff ankle or a weak hip changes what the knee has to absorb every step. Treating only the painful joint is why a lot of knee pain keeps returning.
Do I need a scan for knee pain?
Frequently not. Scans commonly show age related changes present in people with no pain at all. Clinical assessment usually gives a clearer picture.
Can I still run with knee pain?
Often yes, with modification. Complete rest tends to reduce capacity further. The assessment establishes what dose your knee currently tolerates.
How long does runner's knee take to settle?
With appropriate loading, meaningful improvement is common within four to eight weeks.
Do you offer post surgery rehab?
Yes, including after ACL reconstruction, meniscal surgery and knee replacement. We follow the surgical protocol and the surgeon's timeline, then build back to what you actually want to return to rather than stopping at pain free.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly without seeing a GP first, which is what most people do. If you are claiming on private medical insurance, check your policy first because some insurers still require a GP referral before they will authorise treatment.
